Communications Officer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has accused the chairperson of the Electoral Commission of being dishonest with the facts.
Buttressing his claims with a document, allegedly from the EC, which suggest that the EC had taken an already position to make the current voter’s ID card part of the requirement in registering for the new voter’s card, Sammy Gyamfi said the sudden u-turn by the EC reveals its dishonesty to the good people of Ghana.
“Folks, the dishonesty of the Jean Mensah-led EC is legendary. Attached is slide 27 of the EC’s presentation to IPAC on 30th January, 2020 in which they indicated that existing voters’ ID cards will be used for this year’s voter registration exercise.
The question is, why have they excluded the voters’ ID card from registration requirements in the new C.I which has been laid in Parliament. Why the sudden U-turn?” he quizzes.
Adding that, “We maintain that the exclusion of the existing Voters’ ID card from registration requirements will disenfranchise a significant number of eligible voters and suppress votes, mostly in NDC strongholds”.
