The current stance by the Electoral Commission (EC) on the need to compile a new voter’s register will hurt our democracy so badly, Member of Parliament for Tamale North Constituency, Alhassan Suhuyini has said.
According to the legislator, whose political party (NDC) is against the EC’s decision for a new voter’s register, the posture by the commissioners of the EC is a threat to democracy.
Speaking on Accra based TV3, Mr Suhuyini said while the EC consider’s compiling a new register, it should also take into consideration the stress it will put Ghanaians through in trying to acquire a new voter card.
The Electoral Commission has said its plan to have a new voters register for this year’s general election will go ahead as scheduled.
The commission has reiterated the fact that the decision to have a new register is not intended to cheat or disenfranchise anyone, insisting that it will be vindicated at the end of the day.
Meanwhile, Eight political parties opposing the new voters’ register in Ghana took to the streets of Tamale last weekend to express their disappointment against the move by Electoral Commission (EC) to compile a new electoral roll ahead of the 2020 general elections.
